TPH #049 The Tiger Girl - Phantom (Indrajal Comics #097)

Listen to another of my favorite song from my favorite group ABBA. This was a Swedish group which was quite on top during seventies. Many of Hindi super hit songs are copied from their work.Among many others, the most surprising inspiration taker is R D Burman, yes Pancham Da made some of his brilliant numbers based on ABBA's scores. I'll give both English and Hindi versions in future posts. Enjoy this one now.

ABBA - Dancing Queen
Presented By The Phantom Head
Lyrics: (oooo ya) You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life ohh yaa Ooo.. see that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen ahhh ahhh Friday night and the lights are low Looking out for the place to go Where they play the right music, getting in the swing You come in to look for a king Anybody could be that guy Night is young and the music's high With a bit of rock music, everything is fine You're in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine ohh yaaa You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life Ooo.. see that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen You're a teaser, you turn 'em on Leave 'em burning and then you're gone Looking out for another, anyone will do You're in the mood for a dance And when you get the chance You are the Dancing Queen, young and sweet, only seventeen Dancing Queen, feel the beat from the tambourine ohh yaaa You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life Ooo.. see that girl, watch that scene, dig in the Dancing Queen Dig in the Dancing Queen ---------------------------------------------------------- A classic phantom story this time. This is 1951 strip of the same title as Indrajal. Another Ajay Mishra scan. Kudos to this great man.

  1. Thanks a lot for this comic, TPH. BTW, speaking of ABBA, one of their earlier drummers died today, did you hear about it?

  2. Dear TPH,

Nice to see Dara in your blog after a long time. Time is the healer and it give me a good feeling to see his name mentioned. Please accept a small pat on the back (You too Dara).

The tiger girl is part of the IJc torrent and is posted by Prabhat in Esnips. May I reuqest you check with the list of the 55 unposted Ijcs so that reptition could be avoided.
Thanks for posting and the innovative music info. Shocked to see that RD copied from ABBA!
Now regarding your ACK exit it seem that only a quiz or some kind of viewer interaction can keep the comments to a decent no. CW was the first to do this. You have also done well in your blog. Sameer has tried this now and it seems to work! So perhaps you may want to lighten up the ACK blog.
On the otherhand two blogs are always difficult to maintain. This has happend with MTM's Henry blog, MTM and ICC's phantom strip blog. People wnaty information/comics in one place. So I think you could post ACKs in TPH itself.

These days I am not able to visit the blogs often enough. So please excuse the long post

  4. Aditya: No. I came to know about it from you only. Then I googled and found that the deceased drummer was not one of the main quartet member but was some assistant from orchestra. The ABBA group had four main members:

    (i) Benny Andersson,
    (ii) Björn Ulvaeus,
    (iii) Anni-Frid Lyngstad and
    (iv) Agnetha Fältskog.

The name of the group is made using the first letter of each member.

    More info is here.

  5. Grouchy: Three times I tried to download from esnips folder of Prabhat and each time greeted with a message that the maximum download bandwidth of this user is reached, try tomorrow, something like this. Mediafire is a better option.

RDs songs are really inspired type only and not direct Anu Malik style copies. I'll put them on blog soon.

ACKs are in circulation physically, recently they have increased the price to Rs. 35/- each. Its not possible to advertise that blog. So I had set the option in blog such that no listing in google blogs lists, no submitting to search engine etc. As you can try search result will not produce ACK blog. Only those in touch of Indrajal blogs are aware of that. Its a combined effort within a small community. People should realise that they are also a part of that project. But getting only 1 or 2 feedbacks are discouraging enough.

Long comments are most welcome. Longer the better. Its always a treat to read your writings. They are not boring as mine.

  6. Deb: Well, Mama Mia is another big hit. RDBs "mil gaya, hamko saathi mil gaya" from "Hum kisise Kam nahin" is based on that.
Personally I like ABBAs album "Voulez-Vous" the most. At least seven out of ten songs of that album are simply great. Other albums have 2 to 4 good ones.

  7. Dear TPH, You are right. Esnips has started giving bandwidth messages. At the moment seems to be the best.

  8. tph, please go to http://www.itwofs.com/

its the best site to find out which songs have been copied or inspired... they have both versions )))

there is very thin line between "inspiration" and copy,,,,

shankar jaikishan, sdb, salil chaudhary, rdb, o p nayyar were "inspired" by different sources

whole music of aarpar was lifted from ron doodwin;s albums..

    some of shankar jaikishan;s songs

dil use do-Andaaz---- From the song 'With a little help from my friends' by Beatles (1967)!

gumnaam hai koi- Henry Mancini's theme for the movie Charade

kaun hai jo sapnon mein aaya-From Elvis Presley's song Margarita from the movie Fun in Acapulco

    ---------
everybody who loves hindi film music shud see this site... sharam se munh jhuk jayega,,,,

  10. Grouchy: I was able to download few flash strips.

ICC: Thanks for the link. The term inspiration is almost always used for copying, but in some cases it is really some inspiration only. In case of greats like RDB, SDB, OPNayyar etc this is the case. And I think it is ok upto some extent. In a career span of some 40-50 years, if someone makes few songs like this then I won't blame him of plagiarism. Even if they took inspiration, indianness was kept intact.

Would you believe there are some english songs inspired by hindi songs too? I don't have evidence at the moment but I remember many years ago (some 15-20 years) BBC hindi service had a program on this topic. They also played both original hindi and english inspirations.

I don't think we shoul 'jhukao' our heads in shame. many names are missing from that list. madan mohan, naushad, vasant desai, n. datta, usha khanna, kishor kumar, hemant kumar.

Krishna: All credits to Mr. Ajay Mishra. Its unbelievable how many rare comics he has scanned and made available for all of us.
